Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that Cummins might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
