RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of approach shafts leading to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their valour," Healey added. "Including them were a great many British personnel deployed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our security, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in the country, following an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
