Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
